Veteran Dentist Reaps Benefits of New Office Joy Dental Center

Joy Dental Center - Baytown, TX

Dr Faye Bishop-Cumberbatch

Dr. Faye Bishop-Cumberbatch was thrilled to open her new office, Joy Dental Center, a general-dentistry practice in the outskirts of Baytown/Mont Belvieu, Texas, but it took her 27 years to decide to build it—from the ground up! So, what would motivate a seasoned, well-established dentist to tackle a project of this magnitude at that point in her career? In a word...opportunity.

"From the very beginning, Dr. Cumberbatch wanted to invest in the best equipment and technology available," explained Mr. Konesheck.

This rural but growing community, located about 30 minutes from Houston, had started to experience new development with numerous subdivisions breaking ground and a well-respected school district nearby.

Both the exterior and interior of the practice could be mistaken for a well- appointed residence, with beautiful furniture and colors and relaxed seating.

The sunlight-filled office, with its soothing wall colors, transitions from tile floors in the reception area that look like wood to russet-colored carpeting in the hallways. A separate check-out area gives patients more privacy when talking about treatment, insurance information or payments.

"Mont Belvieu was a rapidly developing area with just one other dental office," explained Dr. Cumberbatch, who noted that the expansion at oil refineries in the area were bringing more people to the city. "It seemed to be the perfect place and the perfect time for a new practice."

The land Dr. Cumberbatch purchased for the new practice was right off Highway 10, and it was the first commercial building to be built in that stretch.

Joy Dental opened in January 2014, and within the first year, she saw more than 1,000 patients. Her practice is welcoming 70 to 80 new patients each month; most hear of it through word-of-mouth.

When Dr. Cumberbatch decided to build her new office, a family member recommended Henry Schein to her.

"To start the process, I called Equipment & Technology Specialist Michael Konesheck, who guided me through the process," said Dr. Cumberbatch. "He was always just a phone call away. He had suggestions on a designer, contractor, and any needed service. He was very resourceful. Henry Schein, on the whole, provided me with a one-stop shop."

Dentistry That Feels Like Home

The exterior of the building looks more like a residential building than a commercial one, with rich layered brick, dormers, and sloping, shingled rooflines.

Inside, the reception is bright with many windows and ceilings, some as high as 14 feet. A massive sectional couch fills the room with casual elegance. Other seating arrangements include a round dining table with seating for four and a pair of upholstered chairs set off in the corner. The walls are a sunny hue, and the deep brown floors appear to be a hardwood but are actually durable tile. The outlines of the room are softened by the curved check-in desk and walls, making it feel more home-like than clinical—an intentional design strategy. The frosted glass wall, also curved, separates the clinical area from the reception area and allows the sunlight to pass through into the other parts of the practice. Original paintings from Dr. Cumberbatch decorate the walls throughout the practice, lending an even more personal touch to the practice.

Casual elegance describes the office theme, and that is especially evident as patients sink into the large sectional couch or read or work at the round table that overlooks Dr. Cumberbatch's original art.

Doctor Invests in Advanced Equipment & Technology

The 3,500 square-foot-plus office was built with room for seven operatories but opened with four. Within nine months, Dr. Cumberbatch reached out to Henry Schein and Henry Schein Financial Services to finance and equip a fifth treatment room, thanks to the growing patient load. There is space for two more operatories to be finished, and the doctor anticipates that—as well as adding another dentist to the practice—will be done in the next six months.

Behind the sleek curved glass wall that separates the reception area from the treatment rooms is a variety of advanced equipment, including this Instrumentarium OP300 system, conveniently located near the operatories.

"Patients are referring their friends and their family members," noted Dr. Cumberbatch "We are seeing husbands, wives, and children. I have been practicing for over 27 years, and I have never seen that. It is beautiful!"

In addition to the treatment rooms, there is a galley-style walk-through Pelton & Crane Solaris sterilization center, a Midmark mechanical room, a spacious consult room for treatment planning, a lab, three private offices, and a generously-sized lounge for the staff. A separate checkout maintains confidentiality and prevents bottlenecks.

"Patients are referring their friends and their family members," noted Dr. Cumberbatch. “We are seeing husbands, wives, and children. I have been practicing for over 27 years, and I have never seen that. It is beautiful!"

The operatories were designed to be comfortable for both patients and staff with Pelton & Crane dental chairs and rear delivery units that have KaVo electric handpieces and a Planmeca PlanScan intraoral scanner.

The operatories are equipped with Pelton & Crane chairs, lights, and delivery units as well as KaVo electric handpieces. The NOMAD 2 handheld intraoral X-ray system, along with DEXIS sensors, allow Dr. Cumberbatch and staff to stay with the patient while offering greater comfort and precision. A nearby, separate alcove holds the Cone Beam imaging machine.

All of the new technology is integrated, thanks to Henry Schein's Equipment & Technology Specialist Meredith Lucas. TechCentral designed and installed the practice's network, hardware, Broadview phone system, and Dentrix software. Patient information displays on the computer screens when a call comes in, allowing staff to provide more responsive service. Joy Dental also uses a suite of e-Services to electronically manage scheduling, billing, and insurance claims, including eClaims, QuickBill, eBackup, Insurance Manager, Website Manager, Kiosk, and PowerPay.

"From the very beginning, Dr. Cumberbatch wanted to invest in the best equipment and technology available," explained Mr. Konesheck. "We looked at the options and helped educate her on the benefits, not only to her but her patients
as well."

Same-Day Restorations

The doctor can now offer same-day crowns because of the investments she made in the Planmeca PlanScan CAD/CAM system. Patients can even watch their restorations milled in the office.

"Dr. Cumberbatch made a huge investment in land, a new building, a beautiful office design, and the finest technology and equipment so she could serve a community that she loves," added Mr. Konesheck.

The centrally located, sterilization center by Pelton & Crane flows efficiently from dirty to clean and offers the highest standards in patient care with a Midmark M11 autoclave and Kavo Quattrocare maintenance system.

Dr. Cumberbatch's new office made it possible to offer in-house and same-day restorations and crowns using the Planmeca PlanScan CAD/CAM system.
